Back in 1996, I began volunteering my Saturdays at an animal hospital because I wanted experience in the clinic setting. While I wasn’t old enough to obtain a paid position, I was thrilled to work in the kennels, caring for boarding dogs and cats. Every other week or so, a client brought her deployed son’s pet ferret for a bath. Ferrets possess some incredibly strong scent glands, so regular bathing makes for a much more pleasant experience. Of course, this particular stinker’s name raised some eyebrows for us. Finally one day, my mentor asked the owner WHY Mofo was named as such. Lo and behold, her son joined the Navy after graduation — it all made sense! They don’t make jokes about sailor speak for nothing!
