I was in my junior year of high school when I got my first paying job at a salad buffet restaurant. I was so excited to make my own money, and I felt like my coworkers trained me well. After working there for 90 days, the manager gave me my first evaluation. Everything went well until he said, “but you need to be more analytical — you need to think like a man.” I was stunned. Did he really just say that? I was 16 years old, but I wasn’t blind to the obviously sexist comment my superior just made. I learned rather quickly that prejudice in the workplace didn’t disappear simply because laws and regulations were enacted. I learned that day that I am most certainly a feminist, even if I never did call that particular man out for his misogynistic remark.
