Tomorrow, my first born child turns eighteen years old. Where has the time gone? Parenting seems to be marked by one important goal — raising a good person. While we have struggled over the years with myriad hardships in our family unit, I am grateful we have made it to our young man’s monumental milestone. This is his rite of passage into adulthood, and tomorrow marks our success at bringing our son safely through childhood. Although childhood is relatively safer than in previous generations, certain dangers still threaten to rob children of their right to become adult human beings. I’m thankful that our son never suffered from childhood cancer or witnessed a school shooting. That sounds rather dark, but these are legitimate reasons for which a parent should be grateful. Here’s to you, Son! Happy 18th Birthday!
