As my first semester as an adjunct English instructor winds down, I count my blessings that my career began before I finished my Capstone project. During the fall semester I’ve instructed six tutorial sections of Rhetoric and Composition I, and the level of fulfillment I feel each time I meet with my students compares to nothing else I have ever experienced. I am so grateful for each and everyone of my students, who bring their own stories and personalities into the classroom for the most enriching experience possible. I am grateful for the diversity offered at the university — I feel like my students teach me at times! I am also grateful for the four wonderful professors I’ve co-instructed these courses with. I’ve learned so much from each of them and revised my teaching philosophy to reflect my experience and observations. Of course, I am most grateful to my superiors who offered me this exceptional experience. Were it not for them, I would not have began my career so soon and been as confident about my life choice. I know going forward that I’m ready to lead the classroom for another 30+ years until I retire.
